What lies at the end of Malaysia’s northern border road?

Wang Kelian sits among the limestone hills of Perlis, close to the Thai border. The winding approach, sweeping views and sense of remoteness make the journey feel unlike the familiar West Coast.

We travelled there expecting a scenic stop. Instead, we found a border community shaped by geography, trade and a complicated past.
