Malaysians Abroad: What You Need to Know

I am currently working on a book that I hope will be a go-to reference for Malaysians travelling abroad.

Over the years I lost count of how many Malaysians called me in trouble overseas. A son picked up by the police in some foreign city. An elderly mother suddenly in hospital, the family back home frantic and not knowing what to do. A passport gone. Sometimes worse, a death far from home, and nobody quite sure who to even ring first.

And it was not always a crisis. Half the time it was the ordinary things that trip people up. Trying to register a birth. Getting married. Legalising a document nobody will accept without the right stamp. Dealing with some office that speaks a language you don't, following rules that make no sense to you.

The strange thing is, almost nobody prepares for any of this. People spend weeks planning the flights and the hotel, and not one minute thinking about what happens if something goes wrong. And when it does go wrong, that is the worst possible time to be learning how an embassy works, and, frankly, what it can and cannot do for you.

So I am finally writing the book I always wished I could just hand people before they left.

That is what this book is about. What to sort out beforehand, what to do when things go sideways, who to call, and what help you can actually expect to get. Whether you are heading off to study, to work, to settle, or just to travel, and whether it is you going or someone you love, this is the book to have before you need it.

Because you really do not want to be figuring this out in the middle of the emergency.
